The Portuguese resort of Praia da Luche is another resort of the Algarve, which has changed significantly over the past few decades and has become one of the favorite holiday destinations for English travelers. Fortunately, most of the new hotels were built west of the historic center of Praia da Lus and its relatively flat landscape was not spoiled. Praia da Luz is a great destination for sightseeing and beach tours.
The resort of Praia da Luz is located in southern Portugal, on the Atlantic coast, in the Algarve region. The capital Lisbon is 305 kilometers away, and the nearest international airport is 95 kilometers east of Faro. The first settlement on the territory of modern Praia da Luz was formed during ancient Roman expansion, thanks to which thermal baths and salt mines appeared here, where salt was mined for the needs of the empire. From 8 to 13 Praia da Luche was ruled by the Moors, and in the 14th century the town came under the rule of the Portuguese state. From its foundation until the 80s of 20 centuries, the main activity of the inhabitants of Praia da Luz has been fishing and octopus fishing, which were also exported. In the 80s, hotel chains came to the town, which turned it into a tourist and now the lion's share of locals, who live about 4,000 in Praia da Luz, are employed in the service sector.
The beaches of Praia da Luz are one of the great pride of the city. There are both pebble and sandy sections of the coast, over which the famous local Black Rock hangs. One of the sandy beaches of Praia da Luce has been awarded the Blue Flag Award and it is always the most filled with travelers. This makes other beaches no less beautiful, but it is busy and at 10 a.m. you will find a free chaise longue there. Another pride of Praia da Luce and all of Portugal is the Cathedral of the Most Holy Theotokos, which was so named in consonant with the name of the resort (Bright Beach). It was built in the Middle Ages and at one time became a new compositional center of the city, near which new buildings were built and people tried to settle. So a walk around the Cathedral of Nossa Señora da Luz is a great introduction to the history of the city, which does not require a guidebook.
