Lisbon is the birthplace of Fado. Fado in Portugal is popular and loved by almost all Portuguese and can be heard throughout the country in a wide variety of performances.
Fado is a Portuguese song genre and the performers are called fadista regardless of gender.
There are several versions of the appearance of fado: some sources say that fado has Arabic roots, others say that fado has Brazilian roots, others say that fado songs were first heard from the mouths of sailors singing while sitting on the bow of the ship, the fourth theory says that fado appeared among the poor, who through song could express their feelings about their hard lot.
In any case, fado was born at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries in the poor neighborhoods of Lisbon. Initially, fado was performed in the taverns of poor neighborhoods and only by men. These songs were about what worried them: about a difficult life, about unfulfilled hopes, sadness, jealousy and fear. Over time, fado wins the hearts of other social classes as well.
Over time, fado becomes more and more loved by the people, it is broadcast on the radio, it appears in the movies and subsequently on television.
You can learn more about Fado and its history at the Fado Museum, opened in 1998. On certain days, at the end of the tour, you can listen to live fado.
Interesting! In 2011, Fado was recognized by UNESCO as a heritage of mankind.
