The tour begins with a visit to the Alfama district, which offers panoramic views of the city and the Rio Tejo River. Alfama will immediately give you the opportunity to feel the feeling of antiquity and history, because this is one of the oldest quarters of the capital, from which Lisbon actually began. The picturesque and folk flavor of Alphama has been preserved in the close interweaving of narrow entangled streets, alleys and staircases, in the traditional architecture of stone houses with red tiled roofs, in tiled wall cladding.
Continuing your acquaintance with Lisbon, you will visit the famous Jeromeite Monastery - the most important monument of the city and an architectural masterpiece in the Manueline style, built in the XVI century. The interior of the Cathedral impresses with its grandeur and exquisite splendor. The glory of the Hieronymite Monastery lies not only in its architectural and artistic splendor, outstanding representatives of Portuguese history and culture - the famous navigator Vashku da Gama and the poet Kamoesh, author of "Lusiades" are buried here.
The decoration and undoubted symbol of Lisbon is the Belema Tower, built in the XVI century by order of King Don Manuel and in the old days was both a bastion of the city, a reception room, and even a prison. The building of the Belensky Tower is characterized by a peculiar and attractive exoticism due to the interweaving of Romanesque-Gothic and Arabic decorative and artistic elements. Not far from the Hieronymite Monastery, by the way, there is a confectionery where you can taste the famous "Belensky" cakes.
Getting acquainted with this area of Lisbon, you will definitely see an outstanding monument of the XX century - the Monument dos descobrimentos, dedicated to sea discoveries and expeditions that made up the glory of Portugal as a great maritime power.
The heart of Lisbon is Avenida Liberdade and Baixa. It is impossible to imagine the appearance of the Portuguese capital (neither old nor modern) without visiting this area of Lisbon. Avenida da Liberdade (Freedom Avenue) starts from Dos Restoradores Square. On the avenue there are many buildings of the XIX century, large commercial institutions, cinemas, theaters and hotels. The street is decorated with monuments and sculptures dedicated to historical events and outstanding personalities of Portugal. The Marquis de Pombal Square is completed with a marble sidewalk and a monument to the Marquis in the center. The image of the famous reformer minister is embodied in bronze, the lion next to him symbolizes power, at the foot of the monument there are stories related to the great achievements of the Marquis Di Pombal and the tragic events of the Lisbon earthquake of 1755.
To the north of the square is Edward VII Park, from the solemn height of which the picturesque hills of old Lisbon will open especially impressively.
