Geographical position
Udmurtia borders in the west and north with the Kirov region, in the east - with the Perm region, in the south - with Bashkortostan and Tatarstan. The length of the territory from west to east is 180 kilometers, from north to south - 270 kilometers.
The area of the republic is 42,061 sq km, the population is 1.517 million people (2016).
Climatic features
The climate is inland, with hot summers (average July temperature + 18C) and cold winters with abundant snow (average January temperature -15C). The period with average daily temperatures below 0C lasts 160-175 days, starting in late October and ending in early April. The average annual rainfall is 500-600 mm. A stable snow cover forms in early to mid November, at the latest in early December.
Tourist opportunities
Izhevsk was founded in 1760, but it is believed that the city has a second birthday - 1807, when an arms factory was founded here. Izhevsk is the birthplace of Mikhail Kalashnikov, the designer who created the symbol of modern Russian weapons. The city has preserved buildings from the early 19th century, including the building of an arms factory, an arsenal, residential buildings, wooden houses, and a chapel. In the Kuzebay Gerd Museum you can get acquainted with a rich collection of ethnographic materials, objects of applied art, weapons, casting, the history of the Udmurt people.
It is also worth visiting Votkinsk, where the P.I. Tchaikovsky, the old buildings with wooden and stone buildings have also been preserved in the city.
Fans of the history of Russia should visit the village of Kuzebayevo, where the ancestral pagan prayer house is located, Kestim, where there is a wooden mosque; the village of Kamenno-Zadelye, where a wooden church of the early 19th century has been preserved. History lovers will also find the Idnakar Museum-Reserve. On the territory of the museum there is a medieval settlement, which has attracted archaeologists and ethnographers for several centuries. The museum has a permanent exhibition dedicated to the life, crafts, culture and art of the inhabitants of the settlement.
At numerous recreation centers (Dzerzhinets, Zarya, Zolotoy Yakor and others) there is an opportunity for skiing and snowboarding, for family recreation. Speleo tours and river rafting are regularly organized in the republic.
Every summer in Izhevsk the Rose of the World festival is held, bringing together creative teams from all over Russia.
