Aljezur is an amazing resort in Portugal, where you can simultaneously visit a traditional town that has not yet greatly affected globalization processes. In addition, Aljezur is a first-class beach resort, which is appreciated for its excellent beaches and incredibly beautiful Atlantic Ocean.
The resort of Aljezur is located in southwestern Portugal, on the Atlantic coast, in the Algarve region, on the banks of the Aljezur River. The capital Lisbon is 244 kilometers away north along the coast, and the nearest international airport is 114 kilometers east. People in the Aljezura area have lived since Neolithic times, but formally the modern city was founded in 1280 by King Dinis of Portugal. However, before Dinis, Berbers and Moors lived here, who left behind a rich historical and architectural heritage (the name of the city also has Arabic roots and means "islands"). The 18th-century malaria epidemic affected urban development - the local bishop ordered the residents of the city to move to the other side of the river, after which Aljezur began to develop more rapidly and build bridges. Today, about 6,000 people live in the resort city of Aljezur.
The main historical attraction of Aljezur, its Moorish fortress, rises above the city on a hill. This architectural dominant was built in the 10th century and offers a magnificent view of the old town and the Atlantic coast. Before the large-scale earthquake of 1755, the city has an example of sacred architecture of Portugal - the Church of the Virgin Mary, built in 1673. However, after the earthquake, local bishop Francisco Gomes de Avelar ordered the construction of a new church, which was called Igraya Nova.
However, Aljezur is not only historical sights, but also long beaches, of which there are fourteen. The most popular beaches are Adegas, Bordeira and Kebrada. All of them are connected by an excellent promenade, where travelers meet every evening for dinner.
