The city of Santana, located on the northern coast of Madeira Island, which has an area of 96.2 km2, with a population of about 9,000 people.

In June 2011, the municipality of Santana was awarded the title of "Biosphere Reserve" from UNESCO, recognizing the richness of the ecosystem in which it seeks to combine the conservation of biodiversity. This reserve presents a wide range of natural and unique human, landscape, environmental and cultural values of local, regional, national and international importance.
In Santana you can find hiking trails with a length of more than 120 km and allow visitors to enjoy the extensive natural heritage, contemplate landscaped surroundings, enjoy nature, get acquainted with the cultural wealth of places and communicate with the local population. Here you will find the hiking trails of Vereda do Picu Ruivo, Levada do Rey and Levada do Caldeirau Verde.
